Open lecture by prof. William Il Byun "Renewables in Asia: A Practical Look at the Landscape and Business"

The lecture is organised with the support of the International energy award “Global energy” and Renova Group.

About the speaker:

William Il Byun is Managing Director at Asia Renewables (Greenpower Fuels) and Principal at Conchubar Infrastructure Fund, as well as the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee Member. He is a specialist in renewable energy and climate change project development. Mr. Byun previously served as Managing Director of Renewables and Climate Change (Asia; Middle East) at AES Corporation, and Principal of an investment firm specializing in Asia related infrastructure. William was also the first U.S. Fulbright Scholar in residence at the Ministry of Finance in Korea. He has degrees from the University of Chicago, University of Michigan, and University of London, in Economics, Law and Sociology.

The following issues will be covered:

  • The landscape for energy and renewable energy in Asia – where it actually is, what practical potential there is, and what feasible future paths there may be;
  • A look at both electric power and fuels and the “drivers” behind some countries (such as for Korea and Thailand);
  • Role of technology and policy (such as for Malaysia and Japan);
  • What challenges and characteristics specific to Asia (including “frontier” countries like Indonesia and Myanmar);
  • Potential pathways ahead (such as for China and Brunei).
