A Series of Lectures by Professor Giorgio Sirilli

Professor Giorgio Sirilli — Research director at the Institute for Economic Research on Firms and Growth (CERIS) of the National Research Council — will deliver open lectures at ISSEK on April 24–26, 2017.

All the events will take place at 11 Myasnitskaya Street, 18.1021.00, Room 429.

April 24: Lecture on “Emerging challenges in STI policy making: lessons from the OECD 2016 STI Outlook and other publications”
Science, technology and innovation policies are more than 50 years old, and governments face quite new challenges in steering the process of production and use of new knowledge for the benefit of society. The seminar will focus on a set of old and new issues, particularly on the basis of some recent analyses and data: financial and human resources dedicated to public research, type of research performed in public institutions, careers in public research settings, output and impact of public research, evaluation of research, policies adopted and implemented by governments, changes in the very nature of research and innovation.   

 

25 April 2017: Master class on “Public speaking”
One of the skills of teachers, researchers, professionals in general, consists in the ability to communicate with others. The aim of the lecture is to discuss about the problems that a speaker has to address before, during and after the talk, and provide useful guidelines for improving the efficiency and the effectiveness of his/her communication capacity. The lecture will deal with the main aspects of public speaking: the audience, the structure of the talk, the voice, the posture, the timing, the speaker's appearance, the rehearsal of the talk, the body language, the seriousness, the teaching aids, the criticisms received.

It is expected that participants will actively participate sharing their experience.

April 26, 2017: Lecture on “The measurement of innovation: basic concepts and recent developments in statistical measurement”
The lecture will address the issues related to understanding the role of innovation in society, its conceptualisation and the models used in its statistical measurement. Particularly, it will touch upon the issues related to the development of the Oslo Manual framework, its evolution over the last three decades, and harmonization with the Community Innovation Survey questionnaire. A few examples of data collected through innovation surveys will be provided addressing the following issues: the combination of the four innovation types, the cost of innovation, collaboration in innovation, public support to innovation. Recent developments in the measurement of innovation in the service sector and in society in general will be discussed. Reference will also be made to the analysis of the results of the innovation survey conducted in the Russian Federation.

About the speaker:

Giorgio Sirilli is the Research Director of the Institute for Economic Research on Firms and Growth (CERIS) of the National Research Council (CNR) in Rome, Italy.

Consultant to public and private organisations in Italy and abroad, Italian delegate to committees dealing with science and technology policy issues at the OECD and the European Union, the chairman of the Scientific Council of the "Observatory of Science, Technology and Qualifications", Portugal. He was the chair the OECD Group of National Experts on Science and Technology Indicators (NESTI), which is in charge of the development of methodologies and statistical tools for the collection of data and analysis of science and technology indicators.

Giorgio Sirilli served as the Professor of Industrial economics at the Economics Faculty of the “LUISS - Guido Carli” University (Rome, Italy), of Management of technological innovation at the Engineering Faculty of the Tor Vergata University (Rome, Italy)  and of Economics and management of innovation at the Unitelma University (Rome, Italy).

Director of various research projects, member of the editorial board and referee of scientific journals, the fellow of the IC2 Institute of the University of Texas at Austin, the author of more than 200 scientific publications.
