How Can Big Data Help in Determining Public Sentiment? On the example of the Chinese mass media
On the 2nd of November 2022, a new webinar will be held by the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge (ISSEK) of the Higher School of Economics at the Human Capital Multidisciplinary Research Centre. HSE ISSEK Centre for Strategic Analysis and Big Data fellows Julia Isaeva and Mariia Antasheva will hold a webinar ‘Sentiment Analysis as a Method for Studying Human Capital (Case of China)’.
Webinar agenda:
Sentiment analysis is known to be an effective tool for identifying trends in public sentiment. For instance, it helps to identify the most crucial social problems, predict them and identify possible trajectories for their solution. Big data sentiment analysis in Chinese provides an outstanding opportunity to gain insight into societal issues through the lens of Chinese social media, which can be considered as one of the most representative data sources for sentiment analysis due to the emotionality of the published content.
For the current study, the results of which will be presented at the webinar, the analysis of social networks was carried out in the context of such key topics as ‘Infrastructure investment’ (基础设施建设投资), ‘Education investment’ (教育投资), ‘Public Transportation’ (公共交通), ‘Urban Infrastructure’ (城市基础设施) and others related to improving the infrastructure system throughout the country.
The study of the opinion of the Chinese people in relation to infrastructure facilities can be applied in gaining a better understanding of the population’s satisfaction with the benefits provided by the state (which is directly related to the formation of a favorable environment for the human capital development).
Questions that will be covered at the webinar:
- What trends in the state development, the tasks, and problems it is currently facing can be identified via big data analysis in Chinese?
- Why can the data obtained from the sentiment analysis of Chinese social networks be considered a unique source of information for analyzing the implementation of human capital in China?
- What are the main challenges in parsing big data sources in Chinese?
We invite undergraduate and graduate students, young researchers, and all persons interested in the current human capital agenda and big data analytics tools.
