The Centre promotes the modernization of educational statistics and creates statistical resources which comply with the modern demands and international standards.

In 2000 the staff of the Centre developed the concept of modernizing educational statistics in the Russian Federation, and on this basis, formed a complex system of statistical indicators for education development in the RF, as well as developing a unified system of statistical monitoring of the work of educational institutions of all levels and types.

Experts of the Centre have participated in the development of a new area of Russian educational statistics — the statistics of education financing. An important area of the Centre’s statistical studies is the development of a ranking methodology by education development indicators.

Since 2002, the Centre has been coordinating "Monitoring of education markets and organisations" (MEMO). This project has been implemented at the HSE under the instructions of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science and covers a broad spectrum of participants.

The Centre supports a number of areas of sociological research in educational themes, such as: society’s attitude to education development problems, society’s satisfaction with the level and quality of educational services, evaluation of the population’s level of knowledge, participation of the population in continuing education.

The staff of the Centre consists of economists, statisticians and sociologists who have some experience of working in central and regional bodies of Rosstat (Federal Statistics Service) as well as cooperating with international organisations such as UNESCO, OECD and Eurostat.

An important part of the Centre’s work is the distribution of statistical information on education. Professional and expert communities widely use this information and the statistical publications regularly prepared by the Centre.
