48%

of parents of high school students planning to enter a university don’t give thought to the fact that their children may end up studying in a different region. Five years ago, the number of such parents was higher at 60%. These data were obtained from a survey of Russian households that was conducted in the autumn of 2013 as part of the Monitoring of Education Markets and Organisations (MEMO), a study carried out jointly by HSE and the Public Opinion Foundation.

Opponents of moving currently believe that their region has good educational institutions (this view is held by 24% of parents of high school students). Others simply do not want to let go of their children (17%).

In addition, some of the respondents admitted that having children live in another region is unacceptably expensive for them (7%). Some believe that their children are not independent enough to live in another city (6%).

A news bulletin on the research is planned for publication in the second half of 2014.
