The third International Conference on History and Society Development (ICHSD 2013) is the premier forum for the presentation of new advances and research results in the fields of theoretical, experimental, and applied History and Society Development. The conference brought together the world’s leading researchers, engineers, and scientists in this domain of interest. Ekaterina Streltsova, Junior Research Fellow of the Department for Statistics of Science at the Institute for Statistical Studies and the Economics of Knowledge, took part at the conference. Her report, an analysis of the grant system, was recognized as the best at the conference.

During the conference, Ekaterina Streltsova presented the results of the research she conducted while preparing her thesis, which is dedicated to a sociological analysis of the grant system, and the consequences of its increasing impact on scientists’ life and work. She suggests that this theme is not only topical, but also extremely intriguing as the function of grants has undergone drastic changes over the relatively short time they have been in existence.

'Nowadays no scientist has to prove that he or she lacks funds in order to receive a grant. It’s more important to demonstrate that you are a professional in your area of study, have already achieved great results, and that your research work has relevant scientific potential. The more grants you receive, the higher your rank is within the structure of the scientific field, and your status is in science,' says Streltsova.

At the HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and the Economics of Knowledge, Ekaterina Streltsova is involved in projects related to assessing the effectiveness of science and analysing the country’s technological development.
