The XV April International Conference on Economic and Social Development

The conference opens on the 1st April 2014 at the HSE with the participation of the World Bank and the IMF. The Deputy Chairman of the Conference Programme Committee Andrei Yakovlev spoke about some of the key sessions, lectures and seminars to look out for. This year the conference will hold series of special seminars, among them there will be HSE ISSEK Workshop “Long-term Science, Technology and Innovation Foresight: Challenges to S&T Policy”.

In the first part of the day on 1st April we will continue our tradition of holding two plenary discussions, one on Macroeconomics and the other on the Innovational and Social aspects of Development. The government’s chief economics advisors will be attending. Ronald Inglehart, Head of the Laboratory of Comparative Social Research at HSE St Petersburg, the leading Russian expert on Social Policy Issues Lilya Ovcharova, Harvard professor Peter Hall, Professor of the Berlin Free University, Katharina Blum, Dean of the Economics Faculty, Moscow State University Alexander Auzan and others will take part in other plenary discussions on Cultural Evolution and Modernisation, Social Policy and Government, Institutional Variation in Contemporary Economics. 

Among the honoured guests giving lectures there will be Harvard Professor of Russian History, Richard Pipes, Famous Italian political analyst at the University of Florence, Leonardo Morlino, Professor of the University of Maryland, Sebastian Galiani, leading specialist on researching Human Capital Professor Isaac Ehrlich and others.   

This year at the conference we will be holding series of special seminars, organised by the HSE international laboratories and their foreign partners.

Some of the highlights will be a workshop in English lead by Ronald Inglehart on ‘Social and Cultural Changes in Cross-National Perspective: Values and Modernization’, and the special seminars ‘An Analysis of developing markets and international trade’ (led by Professor Jacques-Francois Tiss), ‘Variation, Social Interaction and Economic Development’ (led by Professor Shlomo Weber at the International Laboratory, Russian Economic School) and ‘Long-term prognosis in research, technology and innovation: the challenge for science and technology policy’ (led by Professor Leonid Gokhberg).

There will also be two seminars for aspirantura and doctoral students — EACES-HSE PhD seminar (it has been running for three years now with the European Association for Comparative Economic Studies) and the HSE PhD seminar in Finance organised by experts at the HSE Department of Finance in cooperation with a number of colleagues from other countries.
