35%

of parents say that their children study in vocational schools, colleges or training schools because they need to ‘get on their feet’ as soon as possible and begin earning income for the family. This information was obtained during a survey of Russian families conducted in the fall of 2013 as part of the Monitoring of Education Markets and Organisations (MEMO), a study carried out jointly by HSE and the Public Opinion Foundation.

Another third of those surveyed are of the opinion that education in vocational schools is closer to real life: what is taught there will really be used in the workplace. Only 16% of parents reported that their children went to vocational schools because it is easier to study there.

A news bulletin on the research is planned for publication in the second half of 2014.
