The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2018 begins tomorrow. A representative delegation from the Higher School of Economics, and the HSE ISSEK will take part in the business and presentation programmes. In particular, the panel session 'Resources and Economics of Global Oceans' will be held on 25 May, which Leonid Gokhberg, First Vice Rector and ISSEK Director was invited to attend. On 25 and 26 May ISSEK experts will host two discussions at the HSE stand: 'Application of Big Data analytics to support strategic decision-making', and 'Doing science: how comfortable young researchers feel in Russian academia'.

English language Master’s Programme 'Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation' of the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge opens new 5th enrolment. 18 April there was the first meeting with the interested candidates. Future innovators, high-tech startup creators and policy makers in S&T took part in the interactive foresight session — in a very uncommon format for the Open Doors Day. Such communication was of great value for all the participants, and made some of them come again — with the applications for admission.

At the round table discussion 'Strategic planning: moving on towards a working model' during the XIX April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development members of the Russian Government and representatives of various ministries jointly with HSE researchers considered how efficiently the country does its strategic planning, and which specific tools it uses in the process.

The HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge conducted a study of best management practices in the science and technology area. The results, and a proposal to set up an online platform for monitoring such practices, were presented at a round table discussion hosted by HSE.

300 participants from 25 European countries took part in a joint effort to design the image of future clusters in the scope of the 2^nd GROW your REGIOn conference in Valencia. Ekaterina Islankina, Researcher at the HSE ISSEK Russian Cluster Observatory, studied European experience and told the colleagues about Russian cluster initiatives, support programmes, and approaches to promoting smart specialisation in Russian regions.

According to a popular belief, the Russians are interested in science, believe it to be beneficial to the society, and tend to embrace all the latest scientific achievements. But is it really so? Yury Voynilov, an expert at the HSE ISSEK, revealed the common myths about the Russians’ attitude towards science and cutting-edge technologies at the lecture delivered at the ZIL Cultural Centre.

The knowledge acquired at the English-language Master's programme of the Higher School of Economics “Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation” allows to launch new value chains, create knowledge-intensive businesses, and open new markets, in general, the power of science changes reality. During the Open-Door Day, the prospective students discovered what is needed to be considered for this programme and to realise the maximum potential of the programme.

An important area being researched today is the relationship between universities and the government in the formation of socioeconomic policy, and this discussion was raised at the international seminar “Universities, Inclusive Development, and Social Innovation” that took place as part of HSE’s XVIII April International Academic Conference.
